About Dr. John Oberg:

Dr. John Oberg is a Founder, CEO, Board Director, Advisor, Professor, and Investor trusted by organizations to navigate growth, conflict, and change. He founded two Austin-based healthcare innovators: Sedera, a community-based medical cost-sharing organization (#193 on Inc 500, #26 in Financial Times Western Hemisphere), and Precina Health, a first-of-its-kind chronic care virtual medical practice and thought leader in AI deployment. He has served on the boards of OnlineMedEd and Health Admins and advises institutions, healthcare leaders, professional services firms, and nonprofits through John Oberg Advisory.

John received his doctorate from the University of Southern California and his MBA from the University of New Mexico. He is an adjunct professor at USC and sits on the Board of Governors. Over three decades, he has authored patents, started companies, managed teams larger than 1,000 people, and studied the behavior of individuals, communities, and systems to catalyze improved behaviors and create best-in-class outcomes — and happier people.

In this episode, Dean Newlund and Dr. John Oberg discuss:

  • The distinction between eustress (healthy, muscle-building stress) and distress (harmful, breaking stress)
  • Mental fatigue and the limits of cognitive processing
  • The concept of an “emotional gas tank” and emotional capacity
  • Radically incremental steps as a method for sustainable behavior change
  • The role of community in motivating difficult but healthy actions

Key Takeaways:

  • Differentiate between eustress and distress and aim for muscle-building stress instead of broken-bone stress.
  • Recognize that the brain can only process so much information and account for mental fatigue in how you work and lead.
  • Take radically incremental steps toward change rather than attempting dramatic overhauls.
  • Use the community as a tool to help yourself do difficult things you might avoid alone.

“Community matters, I think, in the world, in ways that sometimes we underestimate.” — Dr. John Oberg
